  • Description
    The Château La Courtiade vineyard has been owned by the same family since the 17th century. It has been created and developed over the centuries with a strong passion: to develop the terroir through vineyard management that respects the ecosystem. Henri SICARD (13th generation), has been managing the vineyard since 1988. Very active and committed to the development of environmental farming practices, he is one of the architects of the High Environmental Value (HVE) standard obtained by UNIVITIS.

    Robe: intense ruby

    Nose: elegant and rich with aromas of ripe fruits such as blackcurrant and plum underlined by a nice toasted note

    Palate: fresh and generous fruit with blackberry and blackcurrant aromas. A generous finish with notes of spicy fruit

In the Libournais region, a short distance from Gensac in the small commune of Eynesse, we meet Henri Sicard in the heart of his 30-hectare vineyard overlooking the beautiful Dordogne valley.

Henri Sicard is a child of the vines. He grew up in the middle of this vineyard, cultivated by his family since the 17th century, before following in the footsteps of his father.

“I took over in 1988 and have devoted myself ever since, body and soul, to continuing the work of my ancestors.”

The roots of his passion for his vines run deep. With a look of pride in his eyes and a humble smile, he explains the links that unite him to his land, while we follow him step by step as he carefully inspects each of the different parcels of his vineyard.

“Generation after generation, my family has passed on the taste for independence and freedom, but also the love of the song of the vine, the melodious silence of nature.”

Today, Henri intends to preserve and develop his estate through an environmentally friendly approach of which he is one of the most fervent initiators within the UNIVITIS cooperative.

It is therefore with unabashed enthusiasm that he explains the methods of his approach, which has enabled his vineyard to be awarded the HVE or High Environmental Value certification.
“The main part of this approach is based on the preservation of biodiversity, in order to ensure better pollination of the crops, a better balance of the ecosystem, better drainage, and a reduction in soil erosion.”

When you finally ask Henri about the particularities of his wine itself, you can feel the sincerity and passion behind every word.

“My wine is marked by its terroir. It draws its character from the clay-limestone soils of the estate, which are made up of gravel and silty-clay soils. Like the wines of the region, its grape varieties include Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Its colour is very dark and its bouquet evocative of liquorice. It is a wine with a supple attack and a beautiful balance between fruity and tannic notes.

After confessing his pride in seeing his wine awarded a gold medal at the 2016 Gilbert et Gaillard competition and also receiving a very nice testimonial from one of the world’s top sommeliers Andreas Larsson, Henri points us to the types of dishes that will best pair with his wine.

“It’s a wine with character that goes well with informal meals. It goes very well with cold meats, cheese or grilled meats.”
