Halfway between Bordeaux and Périgueux, about 20 kilometres from Saint Emilion and 8 kilometres from the Château de Montaigne, Château Mondésir was owned by the great-granddaughter of the famous author. The manor was built in the 17th century on the site of a medieval fortified castle of which four towers remain and which constituted an outpost for the "English" bastion of Villefranche de Lonchat, founded by King Edward I of England around 1285.
