What is kosher wine?
A kosher wine is a wine produced according to the strict rules of kashrut, the dietary laws in accordance with the Jewish faith. This means that every step—from the harvest to the bottling—is carried out by rabbis, under the continuous supervision of an authorized rabbinical organization. The equipment used is exclusively dedicated to this production, and only certified kosher ingredients are allowed.
All our wines are also Mevushal, a designation indicating that they have been pasteurized using a specific method, allowing them to be served by anyone without losing their kosher status.
What is the origin of kosher wine?
Kosher wine has its roots in antiquity. In Jewish tradition, wine plays a central role in religious rituals, which led to the early establishment of specific purity laws. Today, these standards are still in place, and the production of kosher wines has expanded to the world’s largest wine-growing regions, including our Bordeaux terroir and the IGP Atlantique.
Why produce kosher wine?
At Univitis, we have chosen to produce kosher wine to meet the growing demand both in France and internationally. More and more consumers are seeking products that align with their religious, ethical, or cultural beliefs.
Our OK Kosher-certified wines are crafted to combine rigor, accessibility, and enjoyment. This choice reflects our commitment to offering authentic, modern wines that are perfectly suited for export markets.
How to recognize kosher wine?
A kosher wine can be visually identified by a mention or certification logo on the label. This official mark, issued by a recognized rabbinical authority, certifies that the wine has been produced in full compliance with the laws of kashrut.
Some of the most well-known certifications include:
🔸 OU (Orthodox Union)
🔸 OK Kosher Certification
🔸 KLBD (London Beth Din)
🔸 Beth Din de Paris
Some bottles may also carry the mention “Kosher for Passover,” indicating that they are suitable for Passover, a religious holiday similar to Easter, which commemorates the Hebrews’ exodus from Egypt, without contact with leavened or fermented agents.
These certifications provide consumers with a high level of transparency, traceability, and compliance with religious, health, and ethical standards.
How to taste kosher wine?
Contrary to some misconceptions, kosher wine does not have a distinct taste that sets it apart from non-kosher wine. The winemaking methods are largely similar: the same grape varieties, the same terroirs, and comparable oenological techniques. The main difference lies in the production conditions and the kosher-certified ingredients, which are regulated by kashrut and supervised by a rabbinical authority, as well as some stylistic choices.
This often translates to a selection of fast-maturing grape varieties, such as Merlot, which offers fruity aromas, a smooth roundness, and an enjoyable tasting experience from the very first years.
In red, white, or rosé, our kosher wines from Bordeaux and IGP Atlantique feature accessible, balanced, and fruity profiles – perfect for a variety of occasions or special celebrations.
